Celebrating the release of Minecraft: The Movie in cinemas

Brief

To mark the highly anticipated release of Minecraft: The Movie, Showcase Cinema approached me with an exciting brief: to create a visually striking, fully edible cake installation inspired by the iconic pixelated world of Minecraft. The goal was to reimagine classic cinema snacks, including popcorn, soda, nachos, a hotdog, and even a reclining cinema seat in the blocky pixelated style of the Minecraft universe.

The cakes would serve as a show-stopping centrepiece for the cinema’s opening weekend celebrations, designed to spark buzz across social media and drive footfall to the venue.

Creation

I began by studying the signature blocky aesthetic of the game and translating that into edible forms that still captured the essence of real-life cinema snacks. Each piece, from the oversized popcorn bucket to the reclining cinema seat was carefully sketched, scaled up, and sculpted by hand.

I used layers of vanilla sponge filled with cream, then covered each cake in dark chocolate ganache and fondant to achieve smooth, pixel-like surfaces.

Every element, including the marshmallow popcorn, fondant nachos, and sugar-crafted jalapeños, was meticulously detailed and 100% edible.
