Minecraft Movie Launch Features Amazing Pixel Cake Creations
To celebrate the release of Minecraft: The Movie (digging into Showcase Cinemas from April 4th), Showcase Cinema de Lux Bluewater has undergone a total pixel-powered makeover – and we’re not just talking about pixels on screen. We’re talking full-on, cake-based creations that look almost too good to eat.
In a deliciously creative collaboration with cake artist Michelle Wibowo, Showcase Cinemas has unveiled a jaw-dropping display of Minecraft-style cinema snacks, think a giant popcorn bucket, drinks cup, hot dog, nachos, and even a plush recliner seat… all reimagined in blocky, cakey brilliance.
To bring the Minecraft world to life, I was commissioned to create a full set of Minecraft-inspired cakes representing everyone’s favourite cinema snacks.
All the classics cinema snacks including popcorn, soda, hot dog, nachos, and even the reclining comfy cinema seat were transformed into pixelated world of the Minecraft universe.
Each cake took around 10 to 15 hours to make. The biggest challenge was figuring out how to redesign these familiar, real-world objects to fit the blocky, digital aesthetic of Minecraft.
As soon as I saw the trailer for Minecraft: The Movie, I fell in love with the whimsical props and the imaginative world they created. That instantly inspired the cake designs. I intentionally made each item slightly larger than life to give them a playful, exaggerated feel – on average, they stand about a foot tall and weigh between 3 to 6 kilograms.
Each cake was carved from layers of vanilla sponge with a cream filling, then covered in dark chocolate ganache and fondant for a smooth finish. Every detail is completely edible. The blocky nachos are made from fondant, the popcorn from marshmallows, and the transparent ice cubes in the soda are crafted from gelatin. Even the jalapeños are made from sugar – and don’t worry, they’re not spicy!
These cakes will be on display at Showcase Cinema de Lux Bluewater over the opening weekend – so be sure to swing by and check out these sweet creations before we cut the cake and dig in!
