King Charles III Pop Art Portrait

created using 6,000 M&Ms

Brief

To celebrate King Charles III's official birthday in June, Michelle Wibowo created a bold, contemporary pop art portrait. Taking inspiration from the pageantry of Trooping the Colour, she wanted the piece to feature a brilliant explosion of vibrant tones. Instead of traditional paint, she chose M&M's chocolates as both her medium and her paintbrush.

The creative process began with a meticulously scaled sketch, mapping out how highlights and deep shadows would translate across the King's features.

The resulting 3 by 4-foot canvas required roughly 30 hours of focused assembly and nearly 6,000 individual M&M's. Because tackling food waste is a cause close to her heart, Michelle made sure to source expired chocolates that were destined for disposal, turning waste into a colourful tribute fitting for the King's own environmental values.
